New Engen Employee Spotlight

Nick Zaggy, Performance Marketing Associate

You know our company, you know our product, you know our mission to Elevate the Marketer – but do you know our team? Through our New Engen Employee Spotlight – go under the hood and inside the Engen to get to know some of the amazing people who work hard every day to make sure you’re getting the best results.

We sat down with New Engen Performance Marketing Associate, Nick Zaggy, to learn about his career at New Engen, what he’s most excited about regarding the future of the business, as well as his go to dance move.

Nick, how long have you been at New Engen? Give us the juice.

I started in July 2017, many ages ago when we could all fit into two rooms in Seattle, WA. In February of 2018, I moved to NYC to help open the office there. After some great wins and many rooftop bars, I was offered the chance in August 2018 to help open the office in Charlotte, NC, where I am currently. I’m still banking on the Dubai office, though…

What is the best piece of advice you’ve received at New Engen?

When I first started, Dave Atchison (CEO) told us, “There’s always a solution to the problem. Sometimes you just need to keep digging.” I’ve found that to hold true my entire time here. There have been countless times where I felt that we were hitting a wall with performance or something was going wrong and I couldn’t figure it out. But after buckling down and attacking the problem long enough, I’ve always found the solution and been able to win.

What advice would you give to someone starting at the company today?

Ask a lot of questions and get as involved as you can. There are so many incredibly smart and talented people here, you can learn something from everyone. There are always opportunities to get involved in things like councils, office hours, product updates, raising your hand when someone needs help, etc. The more you get involved, the more quickly you’ll learn and grow. Working at New Engen is definitely not a normal job because it forces you to better yourself and improve your work habits in order to achieve big goals. I feel like I’ve grown more these last 18 months than I would have in 5 years elsewhere. But it all starts with jumping on opportunities as they present themselves and being hungry to get better every day.

Don’t accept things the way they currently are. Our company has grown so quickly because we have smart people who have great ideas and bring them to life. Our product is a living thing which improves and grows based on our input. If you think we could be doing something better, you’re probably right. Open conversations with the right people and don’t be afraid to put in product improvement tickets. If there’s something in our product that annoys you or doesn’t work right, don’t just work around it. Get in the habit of looking at New Engen’s future as something you can directly shape and impact by identifying opportunities and jumping on them.

Who has been your biggest mentor at New Engen?

Director of Performance Marketing, Gary Chan. When I first started at New Engen, I was put on a few accounts with Gary and he taught me a ton in a very short amount of time. He threw me into the fire on many occasions and that type of training helped me to be a well-rounded marketer and thought-leader with my partners. He taught how it’s better to always be on offense and create opportunities rather than being reactive.

What are you most excited about regarding the future of the biz?

All the opportunity that’s ahead! With the launch of SaaS, the strong product & dev team we’ve got, and the great work that sales is doing, I think the next two years are going to be packed with chances for people to step up and make huge impacts on the company’s growth. When I first started, we were a talented group of people just trying to make things happen. Now, we’ve grown into a team of pros that are making big waves in this industry.

What is your favorite memory at New Engen?

Definitely the time a former employee bought replicas of DJ’s (Performance Marketing Associate) favorite mug and stole the original from him. Layne (Sr. Software Engineer) then smashed one of the replicas in an alleyway and sent the photo to DJ on Slack. He was absolutely devastated and ended up photoshopping a memorial for the mug and making it his Slack avatar. After letting his sorrow marinate for a bit, we all snuck up behind him at his desk holding the replica mugs and gave him back the original. It’s kind of evil looking back on it…

Also, we had a sick New Engen Men’s C Division indoor soccer team. Once we were down one goal and had 45 seconds left in the game, I got the ball and sniped the top right corner of the goal to tie it up. With 10 seconds left, Mitch (Performance Marketing Manager) took the ball up and drilled a shot right past the goalie for the last second win. A truly glorious moment in New Engen history.
